The main contribution of the proposed project – the development of a technique and method for the description and representation of implicit features of objects in a virtual reality environment with the objective of improving their immersive perception and enhancing their informational content exposes the potential for a considerable impact over the future development of research and the technologies for information representation in engineering sciences and medicine.

The project is expected to produce scientific and practical results in the fields of information technologies, software engineering, computer graphics, CAD, engineering sciences and medicine. The more notable from these are:

  • Classification scheme of the implicit features of virtual objects.
  • Data structure for storing the features of virtual objects, methods and algorithms for identification and modification of elements in the data structure.
  • System of rules, methods and algorithms for mapping implicit features to virtual objects.
  • Technique for presenting multisensory stimuli representing explicit and implicit features of virtual objects.
  • Enhancing the user interface of a virtual reality system for achieving improved degree of immersion by providing the ability to interact with the representation of the implicit features of the objects.

After their validation, the results described above expose good potential for their exploitation in the industry and medicine in the form of future commercial implementations, mainly for the purposes of design and development of new products, as well as in the medical diagnosis, which may assert a considerable competitive advantage, especially for the small and medium enterprises in the environment of a stagnating and hard to predict economy.

The results acquired from the project can be used for knowledge transfer in different areas of the society, for example medical services, education, marketing, etc.

The application of the methods, models, techniques and principles developed during the project in everyday life IT-systems and devices (i.e. configurators, medical diagnosis devices, technical devices) will increase the work efficiency and will improve the quality of life of the people.

The research team plans to publish the results, this making them available to a larger auditorium and to announce the developed methods and tools to the international science community.
